Using Diflucan to Treat Nail Fungus

Many people use the prescription drug, Diflucan, also known as fluconazole to treat fungal infections. However, this medication is not the most effective. Many other oral prescription drugs currently available work faster, cost less and have a higher cure rate. As with all oral prescription medications used to treat fingernail and toe fungal infections, fluconazole can cause vomiting, skin rashes, headaches and nausea. More serious side effects such as extreme skin reactions and liver toxicity are also possible. You may want to reconsider taking a drug with the potential to cause serious health problems to treat nail fungus which is generally a cosmetic, rather than serious health problem.
Diflucan is not the only nail fungus treatment that can cause serious harm. Other prescription drugs such as Sporanox (itraconazole) and Lamisil (terbinafine) also pose similar risks. However, these medications are not as toxic and are more effective than older anti-fungal prescriptions such as griseofulvin. Although no fungal nail infection treatment is effective 100% of the time, many individuals have experienced success using Diflucan or another prescription drug.
You generally need to take Diflucan for a longer period of time than other prescription drugs if you are using it to treat nail fungus. During your treatment, you should take proper care of your hands and feet by keeping your nails trimmed and clean. Wash and thoroughly dry your feet every day and go barefoot or wear ventilated shoes whenever possible. File infected nails often so they remain thin and remove any crumbling pieces immediately. Continue with these precautions after your infection has disappeared because proper nail care habits may prevent another infection.
Many traditional home remedies and over-the-counter medications are available if the cost of Diflucan or other antifungal is too high or the possible side effects too serious. You can use any of these in place of or in conjunction with prescription medications to help treat your fungus infection. Just make sure to take proper care of your feet and hands.
